Every active state license in Jackson, Clay, Platte and Cass counties (Missouri DHSS) and Johnson and Wyandotte counties (Kansas KDADS) — 58 facilities, with license numbers, beds and inspection records.
49 Missouri DHSS-licensed facilities in the Kansas City metro have disclosed an Alzheimer's special care unit (30 assisted living, 19 nursing homes), and 9 Kansas KDADS-licensed assisted living communities carry memory care in their licensed name.
Neither state issues a memory care license. Missouri's LTC Directory flags each Alzheimer's special care unit disclosed under RSMo 198.510; Kansas KDADS publishes no dementia-unit flag, so the Kansas list here is only the licenses whose name says memory care. Many other Johnson County communities run secured memory care wings: check the assisted living directory and ask each one.

Assisted living is a state license; memory care is a secured dementia program inside a licensed building. Neither Missouri nor Kansas issues a separate memory care license.
| Assisted living | Memory care | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Missouri: a DHSS-licensed ALF (Option 1 or 2) or RCF. Kansas: a KDADS-licensed assisted living facility, residential health care facility or Home Plus. 24-hour personal care and oversight. | A secured program for people with Alzheimer's or another dementia, run inside a licensed assisted living or nursing building. |
| What it isn't | Not skilled nursing. In both states a resident who needs ongoing skilled care moves to a nursing facility. | Not its own license in either state. Missouri tracks it as a disclosed Alzheimer's special care unit (30 metro assisted living licenses have one); Kansas has no public flag at all. |
| Who licenses it | Missouri DHSS on the Missouri side; Kansas KDADS on the Kansas side. | The same agency as the building it sits in. |
| What to ask for | The license level and the most recent state inspection or survey. | Missouri: the RSMo 198.510 special care disclosure. Kansas: dementia training records and how the service agreement covers cognitive needs. |
| Who pays | Medicare pays for neither. MO HealthNet or KanCare waivers can cover care services for eligible residents, but not room and board. | |
Missouri listings come from the Missouri DHSS LTC Directory (updated October 5, 2026); Kansas listings come from the KDADS Adult Care Home Directory (pulled October 24, 2026). Each links to a record page with its state inspection history.
We don't accept payment for placement on this list, and we don't rate facilities. Each card is labeled with the agency that licenses it.
In Missouri, ask for the Alzheimer's special care disclosure filed with DHSS under RSMo 198.510; in Kansas, ask for staff dementia-training records and how the negotiated service agreement covers cognitive needs.
On either side, ask about secured exits, overnight staffing and what would trigger a move to a nursing facility.
